Valve adjustment on '07 GSX R600

Can anybody give me any tips on how to do a valve adjustment on my '07 GSXR? I have read how to do it in the service manuel. But, a little skeptical on a few of it's descriptions & wording. Can you end up ruining your engine if done wrong & how? And, how badly wrong would you need to do it for this to happen?
Also, could a lack of valve adjustment cause backfiring?
