Whats up guys?
I'm planning on getting a bike. I've never rode a street bike, but my brother just got a bike so i've been thinking about getting one. I've been looking at gixxers. The bike i currently want is the 2001 GSXR 750. I know people always say "start off with a 600cc bike". But i'm 6'2" and about 240 pounds. I want a big bike because im a big dude. lol. Don't want one where it looks like im riding a football -__-
SO my question is, what type of bike would you suggest me to start off with? i'm pretty street smart, i'm not an air head. I've rode dirtbikes which is nothing compared to a streetbike, but its a start.
Please email me at gabecastroyo@gmail.com or reply to the post lol.
thanks!

whats up man, welcome to the bike world. and based on your hight and weight i think a gsxr 750 would be ok for you to start on, and with a little 2 wheel experiance you should be fine on a 750. just ride the back/ low traffic roads until you are comfortable taking on the busy highways.

First take the MSF course. You have NO experience on the street, you need to learn the basics. http://www.msf-usa.org/
Start with a used 500 like the Ninja or an older 600. Make sure you get used, because you will most likely drop your bike. I don't think the GSXR 750 is a good choice...too much bike for a new rider.

you're a big dude for sure, and anything less than a 600 is gonna feel very slow (annette, put on a 140 pound backpack and you'll see what I mean). as she suggested, an older, used bike is a good place to start, and the '01 you mentioned would be a good idea. the 600 looks identical mind you, and would be cheaper while only a few HP less (you won't know it b/c of experience it'll still feel VERY FAST).

Thanks for all the advice!!!
Well my brother started off on a 94' ZX7, he just took it slow and eventually got the hang of it. Dropped it once due to the poor turning ratio. We have a navy base in my town thats pretty open, and there are lots of large empty parking lots where he would practice riding for a few weeks. I'm pretty comfortable about starting on a 750, i've read some post and it seems like people can do fine, Just depends who you are.
I'll try and practice on my brothers bike i just don't like his steering ration. That bikes only meant to go straight lol.
Again thanks for all the feedback, i may even think about getting a gsxr 600 maybbeeee a raven?. We'll see! i just don't want a small bike, me being my height and weight i'm pretty sure i can handle a 750.
Some more feedback will help so keep it coming!

Definitely practice in an empty parking lot. Play around with the clutch, and establish the friction zone for whatever bike you end up getting. I'm a new rider, and I had some issues with taking off and stopping at an incline. I've improved on both of those issues, by practicing in an empty parking lot. I'm still learning.
Good luck!

the 600 and 750 are basically the same frame/chassis. different components and such, but size-wise the same. the 750 might even be tad more cramped (it's an even more focused race bike than the 600 even though they don't race it anymore—go figure). most sportbikes won't bite you until well up into the RPMs, so just take it easy on the throttle and you'll be fine. BTW, there's not really any such thing as a GSX-R "raven." that was a Yamaha gimmick, but basically just meant mostly black. so with that in mind buy something beat up for cheap and spray paint it black. bang! instant "raven" edition!

I've been looking around for insurance on the bike...
i'm 19 years old, i don't have my regular license yet, or my M1. Just trying to get quotes, i'll be working on that motorcycle safety course at my local community college. From then take the test at our DMV.
its all good if i can afford the insurance.
I'm not the one to buy some cheap bike then expect to get a nice on later on. I'd rather bite the bullet and get the nice thing first.
So once i find cheap insurance i'll get back to you guys about my choice of bike.
Most likely its the 2003 gsx-r750 or the 2001.

Hey do you guys think a R6 would be fine? i like the all blacked out design, so a raven would be considered. I'm just worried that it may not hold my size and weight, or i might look like a giant on it lol.
someone please respond to this! Getting an r6 would save me some cashhhh!
