2007 GSX R600 & Exhaust Butterfly

I have a 2007 Suzuki GSX R600. I watched a couple of you tube videos of guys taking off the cables that connect to the exhaust butterfly to the back right cowling and cut the fi light wire. I guess some say this mechanism robs potential power from the bike and doesn't harm it by taking it off. My question is is this true? Would it be ok to disconnect it? Do i really need it connected? Would this affect the bike negatively? how does it affect top end power?

leave it alone unless you're changing the exhaust—the you can remove the valve/motor (as per the new exhaust's instructions).

I have put an aftermarket exhaust on (akrapovic slip on). It's not a full exhaust system. Could i still do it?
