hey, I'm getting stationed in Hawaii and was thinking about learning to ride, figured a bike would be better on an island than a car would be, I've decided that I'd like to start in the 600 - 750 cc range but I'm 6'4 and 230 lbs, will the bike be too small for me? and any advice on a good starter bike, other threads have said the ninja 650r is fairly good to beginners. please and thanks for the help

Cool, glad you are interested.
I do recommend a 600cc bike.. they have plenty of power for fun but not soo much to intimate you or cause you to get yourself in trouble.. I would HIGHLY recommend taking a MSF Motorcycle Course first, that way you can learn on a smaller bike that won't be a big deal if it falls over... plus make sure to RESPECT the throttle.. a 600 can still be dangerous.
The best advice I can give you is to get what you want... don't get a "starter bike".. unless you have the money to upgrade later, its much smarter to just get one bike, learn on it, then keep it.
So if you want a GSXR 600, get it.. a ZX6, get it.

and I'm more worried about the size issue than spending more money on an upgrade later, im afraid that unless i try starting on a busa or a zzr1400 ill just bottom out any bike i try to ride

sounds like the local people "this guy" talked to advised him that, although they are harley riders and dont know for certain, he might be a little heavy for a smaller, more beginner friendly streetbike, so i decided to ask about it so i dont end up killing myself
