How to Mark Topics Read

I'm still new to this forum so hopefully this isn't a stupid question.. but how do you mark topics as read? (besides reading all of them). A lot of forums have a button that says "mark topics read"

mine turn purple when they've been opened...the topics i mean

yeah but on the left they have an icon that lights up when there are new posts.. and since i'm still new, most of them show new since i've never read them before.. but i'm honestly not gonna go read everything just to clear them out. LOL
and i know.. its not a big deal... just thought i'd ask.. they bug me. hehe
