This is my first post on this site so sorry if I'am off topic or something
I'am 25 and have riden my frinds dirt bikes and quads in sand and dirt in the past but never on a regular bases and then I had a chance to ride my friends 2nd Gen Ninja 250 and i fell in love with it and now I need one of my own. I plan on taking a safty course at Team Oregon before i get my Lisence and bike but I'am not sure what size bike i should start off on.
I really like the newer 3rd gen ninja 250, but when i was riding my friends bike it felt a little underpowered. I think this would be a good bike to learn on but i think i might out grow it really fast. I don't think i have a lot of skill I'am a NEWBIE I just love to ride and really want to get a bike i can be safe and happy on.
There are a few other starter bikes i have looked at like some buell, suzuki GS500F, yamaha FZ6R but i don't know if any of this would be to much bike for a newbie like me plus the 250 is cheaper all around and has better MPG. Are there any other small bike like the 250 out there that maybe i have over looked?
I have one plan that is to start out on a NEW or USED 3gen ninja 250, ride this bike for maybe two years then sell it, and then moving up to a used Ninja ZXR600, or may be some other 600 bike out there. After I get some miles under my belt I think the 600 class would be perfect for a guy my Size around 6ft tall about 155lb.
The main reason i would like to start out on the 250 ninja is becase it's cheap and by the time i get some skills the bike i really want will be alot cheaper. Even thow i have seen used ninja zxr600 for only a 1000 more or so then a new 250. May be i should just go all out and get a GSXR1000

i have a 636 and a zx 10 both are great bikes.i will tell u this u will crash your first bike, not crash but drop.if u get a 250 you will want a 600.if u get a 600 u will want to see what a 1000 is like. Its like an agrenalin rush.deffinitly get a used one dealers screw people hard.the new 250's and 5's just don't have enough power, especially if you want to ride with your girl or pick up a girl.make sure you think long and hard before purchase,if u get something to small u will regret it,also depends on skills of the rider.make sure u ride WITHIN your means.don't stunt if u dont know how.that first wheelie could be your last.a 1000 has waaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyy ttttooooooooo much power for a newbiedont go with the 1000.it will be to much bike to fast and u could get hurt.I had a buddy of mine he wouldn't listen to any of us,he went to the suzuki dealer and let the salesman talk him out of a gsxr 600 and put him on a sv 1000,way tooooo much bike for his first.2 weeks later i got my 636,i let him ride it and he was like holy *** thats what i was looking for.he went back to the dealer but because it had been dropped and because it was now like 3 weeks he had the bike they told him he needed to give them $2500 in order for him to trade the bike in.he got stuck with it and is now trying to sell it in an economy that has now takin a strate *** on him.Let me know if you need any info.i have 60,000 miles on 2 bikes in 3 years.I have riddin every kind of bike you can think of.A buddy of mine has a triumph daytona 675,he is only like 5'3" and it is the best fit for a smaller guy.his bike feels like a bmx bike, its real small front to back side to side,it has aaaa lot of power and thru the 1st 3 gears he can stay pretty close to my zx 10,which i was suprised as hell.well hit me up if u need any more info.i'm not a pro but i ride everyday
