Craziest cause of accident

So I'm a fairly new rider, bought a 2009 Honda CBR 600RR this past May, just before I left for basic training in the Army. I completed basic and signed up for jump school, completed that and came home this past weekend for my two week leave before following my orders to Virginia. On Monday, the 21st, a buddy and I were out on a ride, cruising around Charlotte when the weirdest accident occurred. I was in the left lane of a two lane road, my buddy staggered behind me, and there was a turkey buzzard in the median munching on some road kill. I sped up and started to change lanes to get around it and the thing took off.....right into my helmet. I don't remember what happened after that, so the rest is from my riding buddy and the police report. Apparently after the buzzard, weighing roughly 20-30 lbs, hit me head on, it exploded, guts and feathers going everywhere and threw me back. I caught myself but grabbed my brakes and locked up the bike. It flipped forwards with me still attached and I landed head first with the bike on top, sliding down the road for some 130 feet, before coming to rest in the middle of a bridge. My buddy laid his down too and took a tumble, but he wound up with only a 3 inch gash in his forearm. We both were taken to trauma in an ambulance on one of the busiest days they'd ever seen. I ended up with a laceration from nostril to nostril requiring 33 stitches to put it back together along with three punctures in my right knee they put 22 stitches in. Also had a concussion but I consider myself very lucky. Anyone ever heard of worse luck?????????

Wow,that is crazy. I just had an aaccident here in germany about a 2 weeks ago on a hot thursday night. I had just gotten my german license here, and I was ready and rolling to put my 2008 GSX-R1000 to the streets. Anyway I was coming around a corner from my house, and I took a corner here a little too fast, and I went off into some dirt on the side of the road into a construction site. The bike flipped, and I flipped with it. As I layed down next to it after coming to a stop with my head and helmet in the road and the rest of my body in the dirt on the right side, I was stunned at what just happened. Apparently there was a little bit of dirt and rocks in the road that I could not see. I ended up at the hospital with road rash on left forearm, and right butt cheek through the nautica jeans I was wearing, and a 2 and a half inch deep hole in my left leg. They gave 14 stitches, seven on the inside of my leg and seven on the outside of my leg. That was a bad night for me, talk about bad luck.

damn turkey buzzards! Biggest bird i ever came across was a morning dove that flew into my upper and cracked it. but that was it. and a big poof of feathers like a cartoon.
for weready2006: how come everybody who crashes blames it on "dirt or gravel in the road" instead of just saying you were going too fast and *** up?

i agree with dave, the biggest bird i've hit was a sparrow into my air duct and it was like a cartoon. I also got the small feathers in my air filter and that was a pain to clean out since they all got stuck in the mesh. Also i've never had much of a problem with gravel or dirt or water or anything. ride safely and within your abilities and you won't have a problem.

we ride the malibu canyons all the time, and there's always some dirt or rocks in the road. but, because we ride "hard" on the road at about 70% there's plenty in reserve to avoid catastrophe. If however, you're riding at your limit you'll panic and crash. slow down and you'll actually go faster. seriously.
