At least a Hayabusa...seriously though, I got a Ninja 500, easy to get used/train on and not going to kill you unless you want to die then there's nothing we can do anyways!

Both of these bikes are great beginner bikes you will get the same ammount of performence out of these bikes, personaly i own a 08 r6 and love it but my friend has an 08 ninja that i have rode that is also a good ride. The Yamaha is a little bit more pricey.

Whats up? The first thing you may want to do is find a forum for your Make and Model. There's nothing like a group/team of people who have the same type of bike you do that can inform you about service, parts, new parts, freebys and more. Im a part of TLZONE.NET As a street bike, you will need just this. TAKE YOUR TIME AND FORGET THE KRAZY RIDING. ITS EXPENSIVE ON THE CRASH AND A TOLL ON THE LIFE OF YOU. BE SAFE. what do you think the insurance is like on the r6 and ninja cause in my thinking the ninja would have higher insurance just because of the name but i could be completely wrong.

i dont think the name would be a factor, if your young and want full coverage you will be a grip no matter what. i pay 500 a year for insurance for my r6 and thats just liabilaty

the name has nothing to do with how much your insurance will cost. It all has to do with the size of the bike 600, 750, 1000 or beyond and how they classify it.... supersport, sport turing etc. R6 or ZX6 are both supersport so insurance is going to be the highest... if you go with a GSXR 750 you will pay liter bike prices so stay small for cheaper rates.
As far as for what bike to go with... any of the 600s are great bikes... the honda is by far the most comfortable, the R6 is best used for the track and the Kawi and Gixxer are very balanced. Sit on them all and just determines which is the best for you...
I love yamaha, but the R6 is just too far forward for me. Its all in what is comfortable for you!

i don't know if you have made up your mind yet, but here's some food for thought. check out the yamaha YZF 600R, or as it's called now the R6S. personally i like it's look better than the standard R6 and for a beginner it's perfect. it looks good, can hang with your buddies on the street, and costs less.
you don't have to have the hottest looking bike on the road or the latest MotoGP technology when learning to ride. however, it does make things more enjoyable when you can look good and hang with your buddies on the street. the R6S has the most bang for your buck, and is cheaper than the regular R6 or ZX6R to insure.
i have a '94 FZR 600 streetfighter/stunter, not because it's popular, but because i love it. it's a fun, comfortable ride, and only costs me $215/year to insure, and it's paid off. plus, when i drop it, i go to the salvage yard and fix it for less than my insurance deductible.

something to think about.... this is your first bike! the first bike almost always goes down, even if its in your driveway. you will have a lot to learn that cant be tought on a forum. do yourself a favor and find a "beater". it doesnt have to look like crap, just something that wont break your heart or your wallet if it falls over.
I got a laid down F2 for my first bike when I was 18, 2 years later I picked up a 900rr ( that I still love) point is the newer 600s are making the same power that liter bikes made 8 to 10 years ago.
If you get sick of it at least you have something you can beat on for a while and usually when you buy a 1,500 to 2,000 dollar bike - you can get that back out of it within 6 months (provided you dont completly destroy it), then you can sell it and something new and shiny! my 2cents
